A comparative profitability analysis of organic and conventional farms in Emilia-Romagna and in Minnesota Organic Eprints
Canavari, Maurizio; Ghelfi, Rino; Olson, Kent D.; Rivaroli, Sergio.
Recent discussion surrounding organic agriculture (also referred to as organic farming) has turned from just whether it represents a viable alternative to conventional agriculture to whether it would be adopted by a significant percentage of farmers. After a beginning phase in which the adoption was mainly due to an ethically based choice of the farmer, the success in the market and the increasing demand for organic products are increasing the number of farmers converting their farming system. Despite the continuing importance of non-economic factors and the uncertainty given by short-term and mid-term fluctuations of prices, a decisive point is whether the conversion to organic farming may be worthwhile from an economic perspective. The aim of the paper...

A Comparison of Plant and Animal Based Fertiliser for the Production of Organic Vegetable Transplants Organic Eprints
Koller, Martin; Alföldi, Thomas; Siegrist, S.; Weibel, Franco.
In Switzerland, transplants for organic vegetable growing have been fertilised traditionally with slaughterhouse by-products. In autumn 2000, the Swiss government restricted the use of such products because of the BSE crisis. To maintain the production of organic transplants, alternative fertilisers needed to be tested. Eleven alternatives to horn powder (standard fertiliser) were selected based on the organic standards of the European Union, including feather powder (as an animal based product without BSE risk). The products were mixed with a standard growing media for organic transplants in a concentration of 300 mg nitrogen L-1 growing media. Different experiments where set up with head lettuce (Lactuca sativa), Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa var....

A History of the Organic Agriculture Movement in Australia Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Australia’s involvement in the organic movement is dated from 1928 in this account. There have been four ‘waves’ of organic advocacy in Australia. The First Wave (1920s & 1930s) follows Rudolf Steiner’s 1924 call at Koberwitz (now Kobierzyce, Poland) for a differentiated agriculture. Australian anthroposophists, beginning with Ernesto Genoni, responded to this call by joining Steiner’s Agricultural Experimental Circle (AEC) of Anthroposophical Farmers and Gardeners which was coordinated from Dornach, Switzerland by Dr Ehrenfried Pfeiffer. Bob Williams presented the first public lecture on biodynamics at the home of Walter Burley and Marion Mahoney Griffin at Castlecrag (Sydney) in 1938. The Second Wave of organic agriculture in Australia (1940s &...

Agronomic strategies for the organic cultivation of potatoes for processing into high quality French fries and potato chips Organic Eprints
Böhm, Herwart; Krause, Tanja; Haase, Thorsten; Haase, Norbert U.; Loges, Ralf; Heß, Jürgen.
In order to achieve the successful cultivation of potato raw material to be processed into French fries and crisps, the high quality standards set by the processing industry have to be fulfilled and high tuber yields attained. In a cooperative research project, different strategies for the cultivation of high quality potato raw material for processing were examined under the conditions of organic farming. The choice of variety was found to be the most important agronomic instrument for the organic farmer to secure high tuber yields and quality. Varieties Agria and Marena can be recommended as they gave high tuber yields of the required size grade and also high French fry quality both at harvest and after storage. With regard to processing into crisps,...

Aktivitäten im Bereich Obstbau-Entomologie 2002 Organic Eprints
Daniel, Claudia; Wyss, Eric.

Organic Eprints
Weißmann, Friedrich; Baulain, Ulrich; Brade, Wilfried; Werner, Daniela; Brandt, Horst.
Beim...

Alternatives for the Production of Forage Protein Organic Eprints
Bramm, Andreas; Böhm, Herwart; Pahlow, Günter; Berk, Andreas.
The aim of the investigation is the provision of home-grown high-protein feed for cattle, pigs and poultry. Field trials with special attention to mixed cropping of lupines with spring cereals and of other legumes for grain production as well as for ensiling as whole crop were carried out in 2004 at two sites in northern Germany: At Braunschweig (conventional farming) and at Trenthorst, close to the Baltic Sea (organic farming). At Braunschweig, with blue lupine varieties grain yields between 29 and 44 dt DM/ha were achieved by sole cropping. In mixed cropping with field peas and spring cereals blue lupines revealed poor competitiveness with yield rates just between 20% and 32% of total grain yield. The only exception was the mixed cropping with rye, were...

Alternatives to Synthetic Chemical Antiparasitic Drugs in Organic Livestock Farming in Europe Organic Eprints
Hoste, Hervé; Sotiraki, Smaragda; Mejer, Helena; Heckendorn, Felix; Maurer, Veronika; Thamsborg, Stig.
Gastrointestinal parasitism with helminths and protozoa remains a major threat in cattle and small ruminant production and has been “rediscovered” in pig and poultry production systems operating under organic farming rules because of the requirement to grant outdoor access to the animals. The control of these parasitic infections is a key issue for the economic viability of farms and for animal welfare. Control solutions aim at (i) providing the agronomical bases for parasite control through rational management of pastures; (ii) stimulating the host immune response through different means; (iii) exploring and evaluating the efficacy of new drugs (i.e., phytotherapy, homeopathy and nutraceuticals); and (iv) developing new concepts of application of chemical...

An Analysis of Organic Agriculture in Turkey: The Current Situation and Basic Constraints - The Updated and Revised Version Organic Eprints
Özbilge, Zeynep.
This article gives information about the current situation of Turkish organic agriculture, especially by comparing the official recognition for organic farming in the European Union with that of Turkey and summarizes the existing constraints. The analysis indicates that the further development of Turkish organic agriculture depends upon the development of the domestic organic market and Turkey has to fulfil a number of conditions to provide it. It is needed that the Turkish state both encourages organic production for the domestic market and supports organic agriculture by all means.

Analyse der Kontroll- und Sanktionshäufigkeiten großer Öko-Kontrollstellen in Deutschland Organic Eprints
Zorn, Alexander; Lippert, Christian; Dabbert, Stephan.

Analyzing Coronas of Fruits and Leaves Organic Eprints
Sadikov, Aleksander; Kononenko, Igor; Weibel, Franco.
We implemented a system GDV Assistant (Gas Discharge Visualisation Technique) for parameterization and visualization of coronas of humans and plants. Besides standard parameters, developed by the team of Prof. Korotkov, the program includes some additional numerical parameters. In last few years in several studies we recorded coronas of apple tree leaves and fruits in order to verify and compare their vitality under different conditions. We used GDV Assistant for preprocessing and for numerical parameterization of coronas and we used various machine learning algorithms for analyzing the databases of parameterized corona pictures. The results of our studies show that coronas of leaves and fruits give useful information about the stress status of...

Animal health and nutrition in organic farming Organic Eprints
Vaarst, Mette; Weisbjerg, Martin Riis; Kristensen, Troels; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; White, Andrew; Roderick, Stephen; Lockeretz, Willie.
Animals are important in organic farming systems, both as a part of the concept and in practice, where there is great weight on forming an integrated system with harmony between the land, the animals and the people, involving local recirculation of feed and manure. Good animal health and welfare is an important goal for organic husbandry. In contrast to crops, animals are not just parts of the farming system, they are also sentient creatures and as such they deserve special moral consideration. They are individuals that need to be cared for, they can suffer, and they can interact with each other and with the humans and environment around them. Animal management is, therefore, very different from crop management. Humans have a moral obligation to treat...

Animal welfare, ethics and organic farming Organic Eprints
Verhoog, Henk; Lund, Vonne; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted.
In this chapter we first give an overview of different interpretations of animal welfare and their relation to different lay and expert approaches to animal welfare. The importance of values to animal welfare is discussed and confronted with the role of science and the scientific ideals of value-freedom and objectivity. The interpretations of animal welfare are then compared with different frameworks from bio-ethics, which can help clarify the moral aspects of animal welfare. The values of organic farming are then discussed as a departure point for a discussion of what a relevant view of animal welfare might be like, in the context of organic farming. This reveals obvious conflicts between different values within organic farming, and some of these dilemmas...
